Get From the Airport to Your Hotel With Didi

Last checked: 2026-06-04 Government, airport, video, and Reddit sources reviewed Airport pickup points vary by city

Before you leave airport Wi-Fi, make sure you have mobile data, your hotel address in Chinese, a working payment method, and a clear pickup plan.

Foreign travelers can use Didi-Greater China, WeChat, or Alipay transport flows for ride-hailing, and some official China visitor guides also mention Trip.com airport shuttle booking. But airports can be confusing: pickup zones may be far from arrivals, drivers may call, reception may be weak in parking garages, and language barriers can make a simple ride stressful.

If you cannot find the ride-hailing pickup point quickly, use the official airport taxi queue or airport rail instead of wandering around with luggage.

  • First-time visitors landing in mainland China and going to a hotel.
  • Travelers using Didi, Alipay Transport -> Taxi, WeChat ride-hailing, Trip.com airport transfer, or official airport taxis.
  • Visitors worried about language, payment, mobile data, pickup points, late-night arrival, or fake taxi approaches.

This guide does not guarantee one airport, app, driver, or payment method will work the same way everywhere.

Prepare these before departure:

  1. Mobile data path for arrival: roaming, travel eSIM, or a plan to buy a local SIM.
  2. Alipay or WeChat Pay setup if you plan to pay through an app.
  3. Didi-Greater China or access to Didi through Alipay or WeChat.
  4. Hotel Chinese name and address.
  5. Hotel phone number.
  6. Screenshot of your booking confirmation.
  7. Backup plan: official taxi queue, airport rail, hotel shuttle, or Trip.com airport transfer.

Do not make airport pickup the first time you test payment, mobile data, and ride-hailing all at once.

Step 1: Decide Your Transport Path Before You Land

Section titled “Step 1: Decide Your Transport Path Before You Land”

Use this order:

Didi or Alipay Taxi if you have mobile data, app payment, and can navigate to the airport ride-hailing pickup zone.

Trip.com airport transfer if you prefer to pre-book and pay with an international card through a travel platform.

Official airport taxi queue if your app, data, payment, or pickup-point navigation is not ready.

Airport rail or metro if the route is simple, you arrive during operating hours, and your luggage load is manageable.

Save all of this offline:

  1. Hotel English name.
  2. Hotel Chinese name.
  3. Hotel Chinese address.
  4. Hotel phone number.
  5. Nearby landmark if available.

Ride-hailing apps can search English names in some cases, but the Chinese address is your safety layer for drivers, airport staff, taxi queue staff, and hotel front desk calls.

Do not walk out first and troubleshoot later. While still inside the airport:

  1. Turn on mobile data.
  2. Confirm maps or translation works.
  3. Open the ride-hailing app or Alipay transport flow.
  4. Confirm the pickup location shown by the app.
  5. Confirm the hotel destination.
  6. Confirm payment method.
  7. Check the airport signs for taxi, metro, and online ride-hailing pickup.

If any of these fail, switch to your backup path inside the terminal.

Basic flow:

  1. Open Didi-Greater China.
  2. Confirm you are using mainland China service.
  3. Allow location access.
  4. Check that the pickup pin is really where you can stand.
  5. Enter the hotel destination.
  6. Choose a service type you understand.
  7. Confirm the estimated fare before requesting.
  8. After a driver accepts, check car color, plate number, and pickup point.
  9. Stay at the pickup point and watch the car movement.

If the driver calls and you cannot communicate, use in-app messaging or ask airport staff to help with a short Chinese message.

Official China visitor guidance describes opening Alipay, choosing Transport, selecting Taxi, and entering pickup and destination to book a ride-hailing service.

Use this path if Alipay already works for you:

  1. Open Alipay.
  2. Go to Transport.
  3. Choose Taxi.
  4. Confirm pickup location.
  5. Enter hotel destination.
  6. Confirm payment and ride details.
  7. Watch for the assigned car and pickup instructions.

If the embedded taxi provider fails, look for a switch-provider option if available, or use Didi-Greater China / official airport taxi queue.

Before getting in:

  1. Match the plate number.
  2. Match the car color and model if shown.
  3. Confirm the destination in the app.
  4. Keep the route open on your phone.
  5. Do not accept a random driver who approaches you away from the official taxi or ride-hailing area.

If you are unsure, step back and ask airport staff where the official taxi queue or online ride-hailing pickup zone is.

Try this order:

  1. Check whether you are at the exact ride-hailing pickup zone, not just “arrivals.”
  2. Send the driver a short message from the app.
  3. Share the pickup point name or gate number if you can.
  4. Wait only a reasonable amount of time.
  5. Cancel and rebook if the driver circles without reaching you.
  6. Switch to official taxi queue if it is late, raining, crowded, or your phone signal is weak.

Airports are one of the easiest places for ride-hailing pickup to become confusing. Do not let a 20-minute pickup problem become a one-hour arrival failure.

Use this order:

  1. Try the payment method already linked in the app.
  2. Try Alipay or WeChat Pay if the ride was ordered through those apps.
  3. Use the official taxi queue and pay by a method the driver accepts.
  4. Use airport rail if payment and taxi options are both failing.
  5. Ask your hotel whether they can help arrange pickup if you are stuck.

Carry cash for arrival day, but do not assume every ride-hailing or taxi scenario will handle cash the same way.

If Someone Offers a Ride Inside the Terminal

Section titled “If Someone Offers a Ride Inside the Terminal”

Be cautious with unsolicited rides.

  1. Use the official taxi queue.
  2. Use a ride ordered inside a known app.
  3. Use a pre-booked transfer you can verify.
  4. Avoid negotiating with random drivers while tired.

If you are approached, keep walking toward official taxi, metro, shuttle, or online ride-hailing signs.

Best way to get to hotel after landing?

  • First check if your hotel has an airport shuttle.
  • Just go to official taxi queue or book an airport transfer from trip.com.
  • For Didi, look for "e-hailing" signage, but can be a bit of a walk to an airport carpark

Getting a Taxi or Didi at 2AM from Shanghai airport into town

  • The safest bet is to book an airport pickup from Trip.com, cost a little more but with peace of mind.
  • There will be Taxis at that hour, you don`t need to book a hotel nearby.
  • The biggest problem with hailing a Didi at the airport is that it can be difficult to locate the designated pickup point.
