Alipay SMS Code Does Not Arrive Before Your Flight

Do not spend your last pre-flight hour hammering the resend button. Try one clean verification cycle, then stop and secure a backup stack: a second payment app, a physical card, and enough RMB or ATM access to get from the airport to the hotel.

Situation

You are still outside China, trying to register or log in to Alipay, and the SMS code does not arrive. If you leave it unresolved, you may land without a tested payment path.

Before You Start

  1. Keep the SIM or eSIM for the registration number active.
  2. Open your bank app and email so security checks are reachable.
  3. Use a stable home Wi-Fi or mobile data connection.
  4. Write down your passport name and number exactly.
  5. Keep your physical card, home SIM, and first-night hotel booking accessible outside the app.

Steps

  1. Check the country code and number digit by digit. If you copied the number from contacts, retype it once manually.
  2. Request the code once and let the timer finish. Do not stack multiple resend attempts back to back.
  3. If nothing arrives, switch the phone once between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then try again after the cooldown. A successful retry after changing networks has happened for some users, but it is not reliable enough to count on.
  4. Check whether the receiving SIM is actually active for texts. Dual-SIM phones, travel eSIM setups, and carrier filtering can leave the right number listed in the app but not actually receiving the code on the device you are holding.
  5. If the code still does not arrive after two clean cycles, stop trying to solve all of China payments through this one screen. Set up WeChat Pay if you can, confirm your physical card works, and plan an ATM or cash fallback for arrival day.
  6. If your real blocker is metro or bus QR setup rather than general payment, do not let that derail the whole trip. In some cities you can tap a bank card directly, and in others a physical transport card from the airport is the faster fix.

If It Fails

Watch for these signals:

  • The code never arrives after multiple cooldowns.
  • The app says requests are too frequent.
  • The number receives other texts but not Alipay.
  • You are now debugging transport QR, payment verification, and phone-number issues at the same time.

Stop Retrying When

  • You have requested codes across two cooldown cycles without success.
  • The app starts rate-limiting you.
  • Departure timing makes further testing risky.
  • You already have one workable fallback and are only trying to avoid inconvenience, not save the trip.

Backup

  1. Set up WeChat Pay with the same travel card if possible.
  2. Keep a physical Visa or Mastercard for hotel, airport purchases, and ATM withdrawal.
  3. Carry RMB cash for landing day or plan one airport ATM stop.
  4. If local transit QR is the only missing piece, buy a physical transport card at the airport or use bank-card tap where supported.
  5. Ask the hotel front desk for payment help only after you have reached the property.

  • Do not assume the code will arrive faster after landing.
  • Do not assume Wi-Fi at the airport will make setup easier.
  • Do not make Alipay your only arrival-day payment path.
  • Do not assume a transport mini-app failure means all payment options are dead.
