Situation

You are at a small shop, stall, or restaurant counter in China. Alipay opens, but the payment code or scan flow fails. People may be waiting behind you.

Before You Start

  1. Know both QR flows: merchant scans you and you scan the merchant.
  2. Keep small RMB notes separate from your main wallet.
  3. Have WeChat Pay or a second card ready if possible.
  4. Keep mobile data on for the payment attempt.
  5. Avoid using a first payment test at a crowded counter.

Steps

  1. Show your Alipay payment code if the merchant has a scanner.
  2. If that fails, ask whether you can scan the merchant code.
  3. Check that the amount and merchant name look reasonable.
  4. Retry once after turning off an unstable VPN or switching network path.
  5. If the merchant uses a personal QR code, expect foreign-card limits.
  6. Switch to cash or another payment method quickly.

If It Fails

Watch for these signals:

  • The app says the card cannot be used for this transaction.
  • The merchant only has a personal QR code.
  • The payment spins without confirmation.
  • The cashier cannot offer another payment channel.

Stop Retrying When

  • One payment-code attempt and one scan attempt both fail.
  • The app gives a card or transaction-type restriction.
  • The queue or taxi wait makes troubleshooting unfair to others.

Backup

  1. Use WeChat Pay if it is already set up.
  2. Pay with cash if the merchant accepts it.
  3. Choose a nearby chain store or formal counter.
  4. Ask your hotel to help with a food or taxi payment later.

  • Do not assume setup success covers personal transfers.
  • Do not assume a small merchant can run a foreign physical card.
